When Beau Frame decided to import a Meteles Cat son, he didn’t muck about. He had very clear reasons for choosing this bloodline and he wanted to find just the right horse with the attributes he believes are crucial for Australia – a great mind, and ability to read and rate a cow while being free moving and a good size. The horse he was looking for must have a strong bottom side, with parents who are themselves proven producers with a lineage of champions. Being an exceptional athlete in his own right was of course a must.
Beau and Emily Frame have had a long association with trainer Jon Templeton. Beau knew that Jon had Meteles Cat progeny and was extremely impressed by them.
When Beau started searching online, he was surprised to quickly find a colt that is a ¾ brother to Metallic Cat Rose. He knew of this mare and thought a lot of her. Metallic Cat Rose’s career highlight was winning the 2020 US NRCHA Worlds Greatest Horseman event ridden by John Swales. It is an elite event which brings together the top US trainers, who are mounted on their best prospects. Winning this event is highly prestigious.
John Swales is quoted as saying of Metallic Cat Rose, “She has a big motor”. When it came to cow-work she excelled, and this is what appealed the most to Beau. John Swales has said of her, “She got in the ground so deep I can’t believe she got out of it, but she rolled right out of there with that cow, went and turned it out in the open and then ran right up there to circle. The cow was running hard and she seemed to stay with it easy. There is….. a lot of gas in the tank when you need it”. (Quarter Horse News, February 22, 2020 by Lillian Kent).
Beau says that the Hall of Fame Inductee, Metallic Cat Rose stood out to him because she had all the intense desire and cow sense of a cutting horse, but she could also chase a cow. She moved the way he liked and he thought a horse like her would be ideally suited to campdrafting and challenges.
If the colt possessed those same attributes, he was exactly the horse Beau was hoping to find. His name was Teles Two Times. He is by Meteles Cat, out of a proven producer, and has a double-cross of the great Lena’s Telesis. His dam, Teletrona produced six money-earning offspring, in cutting and reined cow horse events. Beau would later find out that when the mare passed away in 2020 she had a 2-week-old foal at foot, that foal was Teles Two Times, who had to be raised by a nurse mare.
Beau found Teles Two Times on the Solo Select Horses site and purchased him from an online sale. The sale went live during the night in Australian time, May 2022. Beau’s bid went through at 3am and by the time the sun rose in Queensland, Beau and Emily were the owners of a 2yo stallion.
Teles Two Times stayed in the US under the guidance of trainer Todd Bergen ($4.8 Million dollar rider as of 2024), competing in cowhorse events. Beau made the trip to the US to see the horse in the flesh in December 2022. At this point the decision was made to continue his competitive career in the US for a bit longer, before eventually bringing him home to Australia.
Beau returned to the US in 2023 with Jon Templeton, to watch Teles Two Times in the Cowhorse Futurity. They rode him while there and were very impressed. It was time to bring him home. He went into quarantine in December 2023.
The plan was to give him time to acclimatise before they considered competitions in Australia. As a 4yo, just coming out of his Futurity season, and going through quarantine, some time to recover and mature seemed wise. He arrived in Australia late January, 2024.
Teles Two Times settled in, taking to his new environment without a fuss. He looked great, was relaxed and happy. A few months later, as Beau watched him cruise around the paddock, he decided he was ready to return to light work. He came back in so well, that it wasn’t long before the decision was made to give him a couple of starts from July, 2024. This gave him 6 weeks to prepare for the Cloncurry Stockmans Challenge.
Beau says that among all this horses attributes, his calm and accepting nature is his biggest asset. He takes to everything without a fuss, he is never flustered or bothered. He has the mindset and maturity of a much older horse. “He has absolutely no malice in him and is unflappable”, Beau said. Jon Templeton also says that Teles Two Times takes to training and every expectation with ease.
Beau believes this is a family trait that will breed on. Teletrona was also known to have this nature and just kept improving with maturity. He is confident that Teles Two Times will do the same and will cross over Australian mares extremely well for this reason.
The original idea was to take him straight to the campdraft arena. However, he was such a strong challenge prospect having every attribute to excel. His Australian debut would be at the Cloncurry Stockmans Challenge, where he came straight out and won the first-round dry work.
Two weeks later he went to a campdraft at Texas and won the maiden in his first start. The next day he won the novice. It was remarkable how effortlessly Teles Two Times adapted to campdrafting. Every hope that Beau had was met. He took a chance, bought a horse online based on his type, the way he moved and his genetics, on a strong hunch that paid off.
He was now bound for The Congress Challenge at Dalby, but just to give him a little more training preparation, he went to the Ashford and Juandah plains campdrafts. Everything fell into place and this incredible young stallion blew away every expectation, winning The Congress Classic Challenge by 7 points.
In his first four starts in Australia, Teles Two Times had 4 wins. He is the only stallion Beau can think of who has come into his first season in Australia having been so recently imported and move across from a different discipline to win his first start in a campdraft.
Beau said he really does have everything, from his exceptional nature to the beautiful type of animal he is, and his athletic ability – he is the whole package. His is also extremely fertile with excellent quality semen that freezes well. Beau brought semen over and bred some of their mares before Teles arrived in the country.
The only thing this young stallion has left to prove is to pass on his incredible ability to his progeny. His family are well and truly proven breeders and there is little doubt that Teles Two Times will continue this legacy.
Teles Two Times will be heard from time and time again!
