RS Chisum (Imp) was purchased at the 2007 NCHA Futurity sale in Fort Worth Texas, USA.
We made the trip hoping to purchase a stallion to breed to our mares which had a lot of old ASH Reality breeding in them.
We were looking for a QH that looked like a stockhorse, with big feet, good legs and good temperament, and we liked red roan too. We found Chisum who was a tall lanky yearling and set about to buy him.
His sire, Hes A Peptospoonful had his first foal crop showing at that year’s Futurity, and they were crowd favourites and fantastic athletes, and his mother was a Dual Rey mare whose progeny were also excelling, so we purchased Chisum with confidence.
When he got to Australia, he came home to our cattle property in CQ, and Kim and son Mitchell broke him in as a 2 year old. He went mustering for 6 months before embarking on his futurity year at cutting. He was a good horse in the bush and mustering never phased him.
He had exceptional ability at cutting but had limited showing due to injury.
The first foal crop had 10 progeny born from frozen semen, and produced Koonamara Spoonfula Badge, and Chisums Mary Kate, both great talents in their Futurity year. Since then, his strike rate at shows and challenges with his progeny is exceptional.
He is producing versatile progeny, including exceptional cutting, challenge and campdraft prospects. He lives and stands at Hawkins Equine Breeding centre at Tamworth every year.
His future seems to be as a versatile sire for versatile foals with above average ability and “cow”, from the stock camp to the show ring.
