Warwick Gold Cup – Trip Down Memory Lane
Prior to the year 2000 Laurie Mills held the title of most wins by a person with a total haul of four Gold Cups. He won in 1970 & 1971 with BALDY, in 1976 with MAYBE and again in 1988 with SPECK. All great stories but perhaps the best is his win on “Maybe”.
First round rider Cliff Summerville took ill and with only 15 minutes to spare Lawrie jumped on, trotted a circle and in he went. Lawrie said, “I always pick my own cattle and when I went into the camp I had my eye on a bullock that had just come in. Cliff was sitting on the fence and suggested I take something else and seeing I was on his horse I thought I should do what he wanted. I took his steer and it was a good little one and we made the final. In the final I picked my own steer and it was just one of those dream steers and ran appropriately. Just lucky I guess, but we won.”
